Callala Bay is a small coastal town located on the South Coast of New South Wales, approximately 20km southeast of Nowra. The town is situated on the northern shores of Jervis Bay, a large, sheltered bay known for its pristine beaches, crystal-clear waters and abundance of marine life.

The traditional owners of the land in the area surrounding Jervis Bay are the Wodi Wodi people, who have lived in the region for thousands of years. The Wodi Wodi people used the bay as a source of food, drawing on its rich resources and bountiful waters to sustain themselves. They fished for a variety of species, including bream, mullet and warrigals, and also hunted kangaroos, wallabies and possums in the surrounding bushland.

European settlement of the area began in the early 19th century, when whalers and sealers began using the bay as a base. The first European to claim land in the area was Alexander Berry, a Scottish physician and businessman who became one of the wealthiest and most influential figures in the early development of the region. In 1822, Berry was granted a large area of land surrounding Jervis Bay, which he called "Coolangatta Estate". The estate included the land now occupied by Callala Bay and its surrounding areas.

During the early years of European settlement, the area surrounding Callala Bay was used primarily for grazing sheep and cattle. The first homestead in the area was built in 1846 and was called "The Towers". The land was later subdivided and sold off, and the town of Callala Bay began to develop.

Today, Callala Bay is a popular tourist destination, known for its pristine beaches, clear waters, and relaxed coastal lifestyle. The town has a range of accommodation options, including holiday homes, apartments, and camping facilities. Visitors can enjoy a range of water-based activities, including fishing, swimming, surfing, and kayaking. There are also several walking trails in the area, including the White Sands Walk, which follows the shoreline of Jervis Bay from Greenfield Beach to Hyams Beach.

In recent years, the town has experienced significant growth, with new residential developments, restaurants, and cafes opening up. Despite this growth, Callala Bay has managed to retain its charm and character, with many of its historic buildings and landmarks still standing. The town's rich history and natural beauty make it a unique and special place, loved by locals and visitors alike.
